How each format works
Retractable banner stands
A retractable banner stand stores its printed graphic rolled up inside the base. Pull it up and a support pole holds it at full height; to pack away, it winds back down. The result is a single tall panel, just under 3 ft to 5 ft wide depending on the model, that stands beside a table, a doorway or a lectern.
Tension fabric displays
A tension fabric display is a frame with a printed fabric graphic pulled taut over it. It comes at two scales. The Tension Fabric Banner Stand is a single upright panel, 36 or 48 inches wide, about the width of a retractable stand. The Tension Fabric Display is a full backdrop, 8 ft to 20 ft wide, that fills the space behind your table.
How the two compare in practice
Portability
A retractable stand is the simpler of the two to move. The graphic winds into the base, so the display packs down into one unit. That suits a team moving between hotel conference rooms, client offices and community events around Grand Cayman.
A Tension Fabric Display has more parts, a frame and a folding fabric graphic, and travels in a Soft Canvas Bag or a Hard Case / Podium. It is manageable for a small team, just less grab-and-go.
Setup
A retractable stand is quicker to put up than a fabric frame, which has to be assembled before the fabric goes on. Most portable display systems are designed for setup by your own team without specialist tools. If a backdrop is new to your team, do a trial assembly at the office the week before, so the first attempt is not in a crowded hall.
Footprint
A retractable stand needs little more floor than its base, so it fits beside a registration desk or inside a shop entrance without blocking anyone. A tension fabric backdrop needs the full width of the frame plus some depth, and a curved frame takes more depth than a straight one. Measure your space, and check the ceiling height in smaller meeting rooms, before choosing a size.
Visual presence
A retractable stand behaves like a tall sign: it tells people who you are and points them your way. A tension fabric display behaves more like a set. It fills the space behind your team, appears in every photo of the booth, and makes a 10 ft space look planned. In a hall lined with single stands, a full backdrop is what people notice from the far end.
Repeat use
Both tension fabric products can be ordered as Graphic + Frame or Graphic Only. Once you own the frame, a new campaign or sponsor means a new graphic rather than a whole new display, which is why a tension fabric system can be worth the larger first order. The sizes and options you can order
The retractable stands, the X-Stand and the Tension Fabric Banner Stand sit in the retractable stands and banner displays section of Large Format & Signage. The Tension Fabric Display sits with the trade show displays.
- Standard Retractable Banner Stand: 33 by 81 inches or 47 by 81 inches. The narrower size suits a tight spot beside a desk; the wider one gives your message more room.
- Deluxe Retractable Banner Stand: 33 by 81 inches, single sided or double sided. Choose double sided for an open lobby or walkway where people approach from both directions.
- SD Wide Retractable Banner Stand: 36, 48 or 60 inches wide, all 92 inches tall, the tallest of the retractable stands. The 60 inch width works almost like a compact backdrop.
- X-Stand Banner Display: 24 by 63 inches or 32 by 71 inches, for a smaller event or a spot beside a counter.
- Tension Fabric Banner Stand: 36 by 90 inches or 48 by 90 inches, as Graphic + Frame or Graphic Only.
- Tension Fabric Display: Curved 8 ft, Curved 10 ft, Straight 8 ft, Straight 10 ft or Straight 20 ft, as Graphic + Frame or Graphic Only, with a Soft Canvas Bag or a Hard Case / Podium, printed or unprinted, and the option of 2 LED Lights.
If the organiser allocates a 10 ft wide space, a 10 ft frame is sized for the back wall, and a double space suits the Straight 20 ft. Which is better for your event?
There is no single winner. The right choice depends on the room, how often you exhibit and who carries the kit.
- Conferences and presentations. For a speaking slot or a sign-in table, a retractable stand beside the lectern is usually enough; place it where it will appear in photos of the stage. A double sided Deluxe stand works well at a ballroom entrance.
- Trade shows and expos. With a booth to fill, a Tension Fabric Display sized to the back wall gives you the most presence for the space. A retractable stand at the front corner helps people spot you from down the aisle.
- Retail and showrooms. A retractable stand inside the door handles a seasonal promotion. A Tension Fabric Banner Stand suits a fixed spot, and you can order a Graphic Only replacement when the season changes.
- Frequent exhibitors. For several events a year, a tension fabric frame with replaceable graphics usually makes more sense than new stands each time. For one event and a simple message, a retractable stand is usually the sensible buy.

Artwork, timing and delivery
The Standard Retractable Banner Stand, the Tension Fabric Banner Stand and the Tension Fabric Display have downloadable artwork templates, so follow the template guide for your size. The Deluxe and SD Wide stands, the X-Stand and the SEG displays take artwork with no crop marks and no bleed. Either way, upload a single-page PDF; for a double sided Deluxe stand, send the front and back as separate PDF files.
On any tall display, keep your logo and key message in the upper part of the graphic. The bottom section often ends up behind a table, a chair or a person.
